Giving up smoking

Smoking is the cause of many serious health problems including heart problems, lung conditions and cancer. Find out more about it and get support to give up.

Giving up smokingSmoking causes many serious and fatal diseases including lung cancer, heart disease, bronchitis and emphysema. It also causes many other cancers, respiratory diseases, strokes and can affect fertility.

Half of all long-term smokers die early from smoking-related diseases; it’s never too late to benefit from giving up. Quitting not only adds years to your life, but it also greatly improves the chance of a disease-free, mobile, happier old age.

Therefore if you do smoke, it is strongly recommended you give up as soon as possible. Living longer is not the only advantage, your family will also benefit, you will have more energy and you will breathe more easily.

There is plenty of help at hand in Leicester to support you in giving up smoking:

  • You can contact your GP who will enrol you in a ‘stop smoking’ clinic and prescribe nicotine replacement therapy (patches and gum) or medication to help you.
  • The Leicester Stop Smoking Service are a team of trained NHS advisers who will support you in a way that is best for you. It’s a free, friendly service run by people who understand what you’re going through.
