Patients being supported to register with a new GP practice as Belgrave Surgery is due to close

4th January 2018 | By Liz Mattock | Posted in

Patients of Belgrave Surgery on 13 Loughborough Road in Leicester are being supported by Leicester City Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) to register with a new GP practice, because their current surgery is due to close on 30th April 2018.

The CCG has written to all affected patients to explain that the practice partners, Dr Bapodra and Dr Singh, have informed the CCG that they wish to resign from their contract to provide medical services at this practice on 30th April 2018, which means that the practice will have to close.

Professor Azhar Farooqi, GP and chair of Leicester City CCG, said: “We have been actively seeking alternative options but we have no choice other than to ask patients to register elsewhere. Dr Bapodra owns the premises and he is looking to sell the property once the contract ends. Therefore the building will no longer be available for use as a GP practice.

“At this stage, we are encouraging patients to let us know how this practice closure will affect them. We understand there will be concerns and suggestions, and it is my hope that patients who are going to be affected will tell us about these, so that we can take account of their views and respond accordingly.”

The CCG has devised a number of ways in which people can share their views. Patients can complete a survey online at https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/BelgraveSurgery. Patients may also call a member of the CCG Primary Care Team on 0116 295 1469 (between 9am and 5pm) if they would like the survey to be completed on their behalf over the phone.

The survey will close on Sunday 4th February 2018.

The CCG has also arranged two patient information sessions, where people will have the opportunity to ask questions, share suggestions and concerns. The sessions will both be held at Belgrave Surgery on the following dates:

• 8.30 to 10.00am on Monday 8th January 2018
• 3.30 to 5.00pm on Wednesday 24th January 2018

Speakers of Gujarati and Hindi will be available at each session. Further drop in sessions will be advertised in the practice.

Professor Farooqi added: “We understand that this may be very disappointing news, especially for those who have been patients at Belgrave Surgery for some time. However, please be assured that we are committed to making sure that patients receive the best possible care and continue to have access to a local GP and the full range of services they provide.

“We will keep patients fully informed and will write to them all again in February, with further information. There is no urgency to register with another GP practice just yet. However, if patients wish to register at another GP practice now, they may do so. You can find out more about other local practices on the NHS Choices website: www.nhs.uk.

“We would all like to thank Dr Bapodra and Dr Singh for their commitment to general practice in Leicester and wish them all the very best for the future.”
