Children’s Blood Test Clinic Survey

11th April 2018 | By Liz Mattock | Posted in

People in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland are being asked for their views on possible changes to the children’s blood test clinic.

This specialist service, which is also known as the Paediatric Phlebotomy Service, is available for babies, children and young people up to the age of 16 whose GP has referred them for a blood test. It operates from three clinics in Leicester city: Braunstone Health and Social Care Centre, Westcotes Health Centre and Merlyn Vaz Health and Social Care Centre.

At the moment, the service is run by Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust. This contract is coming to an end in September 2018, which provides an opportunity for Leicester City Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), which commissions the service across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, to consider how this service could best be run in the future, and whether any changes are needed.

Dr Tony Bentley, GP and clinical lead for children’s health with Leicester City CCG, said: “We are committed to buying and developing the best quality services we can for children, young people and their families, so we want to know what people think about the current children’s blood test clinic and what they may want to see happen after September.

“There are two options that we are considering. We can keep the children’s blood test clinic as one service and one contract as it is now. Depending on who wins the contract, the location of the clinics may change, but all blood tests would be carried out by the same specialist provider.

“Alternatively, we could split the service into two and have two contracts. This would mean that the service for babies and children between 0 to 10 years old would be delivered by a specialist provider. Children and young people between 10 and 16 could potentially have their service provided by a local GP practice.”

People can share their views by completing the survey online at https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/Childrensbloodclinic. Paper copies of the survey are available by calling 0116 295 1123 (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm) or emailing joanne.ryder@leicestercityccg.nhs.uk  The survey is open until 6th May 2018.
