New NHS drive to help patients find the right care first time

2nd April 2015 | By Liz Mattock | Posted in

NHS organisations in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland have joined forces in a new drive to help patients find the right care first time.

They have given a fresh look to the long-running Choose Better campaign, with an updated website and posters, as well as the wide-scale direct mailing of an easy-to-use guide.

The guide is a handy, postcard-size pamphlet which is being sent out to more than 100,000 targeted homes across the area. A further 100,000-plus will be distributed via GP surgeries, health centres, pharmacists and hospitals, as well as council offices, libraries and schools.

The key message is: “Alternative NHS services provide quick, professional healthcare, 7 days a week.”

The campaign’s aim is to help patients choose the most appropriate healthcare service, depending on their care needs, the time of day and where they are in the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland area.

It promotes healthcare alternatives such as self-care, pharmacists, GP practices, NHS 111, urgent care centres and walk-in centres, as well as when it’s right to go to A&E. The range includes the revised urgent care services available in East Leicestershire and Rutland from 1 April, offering longer hours for minor injury and illness treatment.

Launching the new-look campaign are Leicester City Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), West Leicestershire CCG and East Leicestershire and Rutland CCG, backed by local hospitals, the ambulance service and other healthcare professionals, along with the city and county councils. Their campaign will be supported by radio advertising and promotional ‘ad-vans’ touring the streets.

Professor Azhar Farooqi, GP and co-chair of Leicester City CCG, on behalf of the three NHS Clinical Commissioning Groups, said: “The NHS across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland provides services to suit all needs, and it’s well worth patients taking a moment to find out what’s available. These handy new Choose Better pocket guides will do just that and we hope people will keep them for quick reference.

“Understandably, when we become unwell, we will naturally want to seek the quickest treatment. Choosing better means finding the most appropriate service available. It is always better to tackle health matters in the right way and in a timely manner before they get worse and require emergency treatment.”
