New provider of wheelchair, orthotics and prosthetics services

26th October 2018 | By Melanie Shilton | Posted in

People living in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland who use specialist mobility and control equipment will now receive this service from Opcare, part of the Ability Matters Group. The service will now be easier to access, as patients will be able to refer themselves.

Wheelchair, orthotics and prosthetics services were previously provided by Blatchford. Opcare were appointed following a procurement process earlier this year.

Dr David Shepherd, GP and Board member for Leicester City Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “The contract with our previous provider of this service, Blatchford, was coming to an end last year. This gave us the opportunity to ask patients what they thought of the service, what was important to them and what would make it better.

“We have taken into account all of the feedback we received from our patient survey, in making our decision as to how the service needs to be delivered and who will provide it in the future. Opcare has over 25 years’ experience of providing specialist prosthetic, orthotic and mobility services throughout the UK and Ireland.

“The service will be provided from the same locations that patients will already be familiar with and patients will continue to be cared for by many of the same staff, which is something we know they really value.”

The service will now also offer the following benefits:

  • There will be a single point of contact for all three services. This will benefit the many patients who use more than one of the services, for example, wheelchairs and prosthetics.
  • Gaining access to the service will be easier, with more health professionals able to make referrals as well as GPs. Patients will also be able to refer themselves.

Neil James, Opcare’s Chief Operating Officer, said: “We are delighted to have been awarded these contracts, and will work hard to ensure we provide an efficient and user-focussed service. On behalf of all of the staff at Opcare, we are excited to have the opportunity to work closely with the Leicester CCGs, NHS England and, most importantly, the service users.”

Letters have been sent out to all patients of the service. Any existing appointments arranged with Blatchford, will now be carried out by Opcare.

Patients who have any queries or need to arrange new appointments, should call Opcare on 0116 296 8400.
