Oadby and Wigston GP urges local people to get tested for coronavirus

17th July 2020 | By Melanie Shilton | Posted in

A GP in Oadby and Wigston, the area with the highest coronavirus infection rate in Leicestershire is urging local residents to get tested for the virus in a bid to reduce the infection rate. The advice comes as the borough and the city face a further local lockdown for at least another fortnight.

Dr Vivek Varakantam, GP and Locality Lead in Oadby and Wigston, said: “I am urging local residents to help fight the high number of coronavirus cases in Oadby and Wigston by getting tested for the virus.

“The borough has the highest infection rate in Leicestershire, but we can start getting this under control if people get tested, even if they don’t have symptoms. This is because you can have coronavirus and pass it on to others unknowingly, without displaying any symptoms.

“Thousands of households in Oadby and Wigston will have received a leaflet, and a text message telling them to get tested – whether they have symptoms or not.

“If you live in Oadby and Wigston, it is important that you take this advice seriously and get tested.

“If you test positive you must self-isolate for 7 days and members of your household should self-isolate for 14 days.

“People should stay at home as much as possible, always, keep 2 metres apart if they need to go out and wash their hands regularly and get tested if they haven’t already done so by calling 119 or booking online at nhs.uk/ask-for-a-coronavirus-test

“Together we can get the infection rate down and protect ourselves, our family, friends and communities. Thank you for playing your part.”
