Views sought on GP services for Leicester’s care home residents and housebound patients

Leicester City Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and NHS England are considering new ways of providing GP services for these patients. One option being considered is to commission a new specialist GP service for care home patients, which focusses on their specific needs. The CCG is also considering whether this service could be extended to include housebound patients.

Dr Nitin Joshi, GP and Leicester City CCG lead for older people, said:  “The medical needs of care home residents are often the most complex of any group of patients in the community. This new service would provide everything you would currently receive from a general practice along with a number of key tailored extras. There would be access to nurses with a specialist interest in older people, geriatrician advice and assessment, dietetics and dedicated pharmacy support.”

The new service is being designed so that the same GP practice would attend to all residents in a care home, meaning greater ease of communication between care homes and their new practice. The service would also ensure that the needs of Leicester’s multicultural and diverse population are met. Benefits, compared with the current system, would include:

  • a seven day per week service and extended access to advice and assessment
  • better preventative healthcare advice
  • fewer unnecessary admissions to hospital
  • regular visits for long term condition monitoring of patients with long term health conditions
  • Improved continuity of care.

Patient choice would still be at the centre of any changes to the services offered.  Patients who choose to register with the proposed new service would be agreeing to change from their current GP practice to the new service.

Dr Joshi added: “It is really important that we receive people’s views about the proposed new service; we are already consulting with GPs, care home staff and residents and we would also like to hear from other people, especially those who may use this new service, their relatives and carers, so that we can ensure that any new service meets the needs of these particular patients.”

The survey is open until 8th May 2015.  You can complete it online here.
