Vote for your favourite lung project

Residents are invited to attend a public voting event on 2nd March. This marks the final part of an £80,000 new project called Health in your hands which aims to prevent and tackle lung disease in city communities.

In January, the CCG invited community groups in Leicester to bid for pots of money between £500 and £5,000 to prevent and manage lung disease in their area. The specific disease is called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). For the purpose of this project it will simply be called lung disease.

On the voting day people will have the chance see a short two minute presentation from each community group and vote for their favourite.

Patients and members of the public are being invited to register for the voting event now, ahead of the event. It will he held on Saturday March 2, between 10am and 3pm at the Peepul Centre, Orchardson Avenue, Leicester, LE4 6DP.

Furthermore residents will get the chance to visit a video booth where they will have the opportunity leave feedback on local health services. People are encouraged to comment on which services work well in their community and suggest where services might work better.

Professor Azhar Farooqi, GP and chair of Leicester City CCG, said: “This is a really exciting project which we hope will reach to the very heart of the diverse communities in Leicester as well as bring people together. We have had 39 applications for funding, all from different areas of the city and all of a very high standard. They are currently going through an evaluation process. Successful bidders will be informed by close of play on Friday February 22.

“We want the day to be fun and exciting for local people but we also wanted to give them that extra opportunity to share their views and meet members of the CCG governing body in person. They will also have the opportunity to discuss the local health agenda and changes to their local health service.”

The city has been divided into three areas, East, South and West, based on parliamentary constituencies, and each area will be given £20,000 to choose services which will help to prevent people from developing lung disease or to help those who are already living with the condition. There will also be £20,000 available for city-wide schemes, making £80,000 in total.

There will be free family entertainment on the day including circus acts and an interactive workshop, balloonist, face painters, an interactive quiz and health stalls offering, health, lung and diabetes checks. There will also be free refreshments and a crèche for young children. Anyone requiring the services of the crèche is asked to register their requirements on registering for the event.
